What are Web Statistics?

Websites and servers collect an enormous amount of raw data about the visitors to the pages and servers. Smart site or server owners and operators can choose to process that raw data with web analytic software. The data that the analytic software processes is turned into usable information, typically in a statistic format, which can be used by the owner or operator of the site or server to improve the sites effectiveness or efficiency, or just to check on the site’s current status.

There are a variety of different web statistics that can come from web analytic software. Examples of different web statistics that can be easily produced from web analytic software include total visits to the site or server, number of unique visits, average duration of the visits, common geographic localities of visitors, what search engines are directing traffic to the site, amount of visits from robots and crawlers, and peak traffic days of the week and times of the day among many more statistics that can be developed from the raw data that is collected.

How are Web Statistics Used?

From the extensive list mentioned above it is easy to see that there are a variety of different ways that website or server owners and operators can use the web statistics to help with the functionality of their websites or servers. Owners and operators can specify which statistics they want to show up in the readout from the web analytic software; by specifying the statistics they want to receive, these individuals can customize the information they are learning about their site to support whatever they are trying to do with regards to maintaining the site, changing the direction the site is going in, or improving the site. Web statistics are key performance indicators for sites and servers and should be paid attention to in order to help with the daily and long-term managing of a website or server.
